Feature Exhibits
There’s always something new at the Waterloo Center for the Arts' Phelps Youth Pavilion. In addition to permanent interactive exhibits in the R.J. McElroy Junior Galleries I and II, Junior Gallery III will feature changing exhibitions throughout the year. These rotating exhibits will feature a variety of art forms from artists across the nation, all offering unique opportunities for visitors to be actively engaged while experiencing and creating art. The following new exhibit will be on display October 1, 2011 through August 31, 2012.
Hole #1
Jackson Pollack | Abstract Expressionism
Golfers will maneuver around a suspended “paintbrush” pendulum that swings over the hole, which is
splattered with paint in a manner reminiscent of Pollack’s work.
Hole #2
Bridget Riley | Op Art (optical illusion)
3-D obstacles, based on Riley’s geometric optical illusion paintings, will serve as physical barriers and
challenge each golfer’s sense of perception.
Hole #3
Horace Pippin | African American Folk Art
One of Pippin’s charming interior scenes from the old South creates fun hazards. Golfers will have to make their way around furnishings, rugs and an old cast iron stove to put their ball in the hole.
Hole #4
Georges Seurat | Impressionism/Pointillism
Seurat’s famous “Sunday in the Park” work will be re-created in 3 dimensions, and golfers will have to
navigate the many characters from the painting, then sink their ball into the hole under the Eiffel Tower.
Hole #5
Salvador Dali | Surrealism
Melting clocks from Dali’s masterpiece “Persistence of Memory” are obstacles on this hole, which captures the surreal dream quality typical of the artist’s work.
Hole #6
Pablo Picasso | Cubism
A re-creation of one of Picasso’s monumental public art sculptures will stand between the golfer and a hole-in-one. Sloped and textured greens will also challenge golfers. Golfers will also learn about Cubism and can use their reflection to become the subject of a Cubist painting in a special multifaceted
mirror.
Hole #7
Andy Warhol | Pop Art
Golfers will navigate their ball under a gigantic Campbell’s Soup can, an image immortalized by Warhol in his work, which appropriated imagery from advertising.
Hole #8
Claude Monet | Impressionism
Monet is best known for paintings he created in his own garden. This hole recreates a scene from Monet’s garden, complete with a footbridge and a stream filled with water lily obstructions.
Hole #9
Edvard Munch | Expressionism/Symbolism
Golfers will aim for the gaping mouth of Munch’s famous “screamer” and if they hit the target they will hear him scream!
